Only 6 days until my Vegan For a Month starts.
I am still looking forward to trying out the Vegan thing.
With the recent '
food chain' concern that is building in the press I think it is probably going to be a good thing for me. Apparently, the same practice of putting this toxic chemical, melamine into pet food is also an 'acceptable' practice in China to put into animal feed.
So some of this feed was sold to chicken farms here in the USA. Meaning that the toxic chemical was fed to chickens that we eat here in the USA.
I have already told Gina that I am going to start buying 'Organic' chicken when I start eating meat again. This might also move into buying organic meats, across the board.
Mind you, that all of this started because of the
Pet Food recalls that have been going on for the
last couple of months. They have found that the melamine by itself is somewhat benign, as far as toxic chemicals go. However, especially in cats when the chemical is mixed with a particular form of acid, found in the cat food they were testing, it turns into crystals in the kidneys of the poor kitties. That is what is leading to the deaths.
So maybe they put too much melamine into the wheat gluten that was given to the pet food manufacturers. Maybe when it is fed to livestock the necessary deadly combination of chemicals doesn't happen. All I know is that it makes me wary of any and all food related stuffs coming from China.
Get this, from the interview Gina read to me of a worker in China. The practice of putting melamine into animal feed is relatively common, because it 'raises' the protein levels of the feed, as far as passing the tests that the animal feed is subjected to, that are supposed to determine good quality, high protein animal feed from low quality, low protein animal feed.
Therefore, they admit that it is a common practice to fake the test by adding in the melamine. To FAKE the test. They ADMIT it.
WTF!?!
Anyway, I am going to need to look for some organic bacon, because
I just found this fascinating clock that I think I would like to try, at least for a week.
Stepping down off the soapbox now.
Back to the grind.
