Saturday, May 19. 2007I fell off the wagon after 11 days
I sit here conflicted and somewhat ashamed as I fell off the wagon last night.
I am writing this blog post today after having just consumed some tasty corn tortillas with melted cheese (quesadilla) and a Clif Builder Bar. Early yesterday morning, I made plans with some old friends that Jeremy hasn't seen in like 5 years, I had run into the Prellops a few weeks back, a completely chance meeting. I decided on Cracker Barrel, knowing that there probably wouldn't be anything on the menu for me. I figured this was going to be my defining moment during this Vegan adventure. I would either crack or I would endure. As the pressure to become an omnivore had been mounting this past week, I started too look at this experiment in dietary veganism as something more like a test of my personal discipline. I apparently lack consider personal discipline, that would be the conclusion of my vegan experiment. Given what I read in the book Vegan Freaks, I know that my vegan experiment was for all the wrong reasons, so I welcome any comments from the die-hard vegans out there. Within a few days of the start of all of this, I realized that being a Vegan was hard, very hard. I never thought it would be fall off a log easy, but I never thought it would be this hard. Of course this reminds me of an adage "If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.' Since this post is attempting to be about full disclosure of my experiment, I said a few days in 'Being a Vegan SUCKS!'. Mind you, I wasn't doing it for any of the right reasons. I am not morally opposed to meat. I was trying to find out what it was like to be my sister back in college. This week had it's fair share of stress at work, but I managed to be good about it all. I managed to go out to eat with coworkers and stick to a vegan lifestyle. There were some moments of poor planning that bugged me, I should have planned better, but I didn't. However, there was something that snapped, or maybe the term 'fractured' at lunch on Friday. We went to Sushi Sake, a decent sushi place near the office. I ordered Oshinko (various pickles), Miso, Edamame, cucumber rolls and avocado rolls. Maybe I should have ordered more food, but when Gina and Jeremy were eating their steak Bento boxes, I was overwhelmed with jealousy. I love the bento box, I love steak. I didn't want to continue with the experiment. Mind you, I had this feeling while folks were eating pizza in front of me. But this time it was a bit stronger. I ordered a bowl of fried rice at this point, figuring that the jealousy was mainly coming from my continued hunger. The fried rice had bits of pork in it. SUCK! I picked them out and ate the fried rice. While watching them eat the bento boxes, I thought about how I would probably eat eggs and bacon in the morning with the Prellops. I think I had resigned myself to falling off the wagon in the morning. However, then in the afternoon. I had a marathon conference call. This was the straw that turned the fracture into a full on break. I need a drink after work and more importantly I had an urge for comfort food. Unfortunately, comfort food typically isn't Vegan. I should probably restate that. Comfort food that can be bought at a restaurant is typically not Vegan. We ordered a variety of appetizers and I had a few drinks. The funny part about the drinks was that, I opened the menu and saw a good looking slush style drink that stated it was a red bull cherry slush. But it didn't come with any alcohol, I asked the waitress: Ben: Does this come with vodka? (pointing at picture of red bull cherry slush) Waitress: No. Ben: Can I get this with vodka? (still pointing) Waitress: Yeah, I think we can do that. They brought out the glass, and a full can of red bull. "Some assembly required", I thought to myself, I might have said this out loud as well. I had sort of wanted to order a steak. However, I was concerned that my body might reject a sudden infusion of red meat. There was a cobb salad on the menu. It was definitely not the best cobb salad I had ever had. But it was pretty good. That meal ended my 11 days as a Vegan. I won't go into the details about what I had for breakfast, but it was not Vegan, and I did find it tasty. I am not sure that I will ever try the Vegan thing again. I will continue to eat healthy, likely I will eat Vegan meals from time to time. I salute all of you Vegans out there. I salute your dedication and respect your moral convictions. Time to grab something to eat. Laterz Wednesday, May 16. 2007Vegan For A Month: Day 8
Breakfast: Oatmeal
Lunch: Clif bar and a salad (from Quiznos) Dinner: Salad from Pappasitos I feel my sister's pain. There was a bit of a snafu and lunch wasn't ordered. So they ordered pizza. That meant I had to find something else to eat. We headed over to CVS (about a block and a half away), we scoured the protein bar section. They had one Clif bar left. But get this, there was this bar there called like 'Soy Goodness' or something like that, I can't remember the full name. Looking at it, it was a fruit flavored protein bar. In reading the ingredients though, it has butter. WTF, do you put butter into a bar that specifically has soy protein. Oh yeah, on the way up here we stopped in Hillsboro, TX and I bought a bag of chips. I had wanted to buy a bag of 'Sea salt and cracked black pepper' chips, but when I was looking over the ingredients and there was butter stuff in there too. So I bought the regular version of the chips the ingredients were 'Potatoes, Canola Oil, Salt'. Your telling me they couldn't just put some cracked pepper in there. Anyway, I think I have 'Vegan Rage'. I bought the one Clif bar from CVS and we headed over to Quiznos. They looked at me a little weird when I ordered the salad and requested that they not put any meat or cheese on it (and no ranch dressing). Then came time for dinner. There were 5 of us going to dinner so that meant I couldn't really force my vegan needs on them. I called a couple of coworkers to ask for good places to eat that were not too far away from the office up here in North Dallas. Finally decided on Pappasitos, a Mexican restaurant, I figured I could get them to make me a vegan salad. Vs going to Bone Daddy's and eating French fries for dinner. The salad was good, I should have ordered extra avocado, but live and learn. My Vegan needs were new to some of my coworkers so we discussed it a little bit. Back to the grind. Laterz Monday, May 14. 2007Vegan Update: Day 7 - Food Shui!!!!
Breakfast: Granola (with soymilk) and Coffee (also with soymilk)
Lunch: Food Shui Dinner: Who knows, who knows. Part of it I am sure will be a Clif builder bar. We ate at Fire Bowl the other day and I had the vegan version of one of my favorite dishes there, as I said it was good but not quite the same. Food Shui was very good, Jeremy and I went there for lunch. They are a stir-fry type place that also has a variety of other things on the menu like Pho. I had General Tso's Tofu, it is served over steamed rice and quite tasty. The Tofu was cut into triangle rather than squares, I think this definitely made the fried texture crispier and there was enough General Tso's sauce in the bowl to make everything just right (and spicy). Jeremy, Eddie and I spent all day in a room working and it is now time to head up to the house, pack a bag and head drive to Dallas. I am conducting a training session over the next two days in Dallas. Back to the grind (for a minute or two). Laterz Sunday, May 13. 2007Vegan For A Month: Day 6
Breakfast: Oatmeal & Coffee with soy milk
Lunch: We were going to eat at Food Shui, this stir fry place that has good Vegan reviews. However, they changed their hours, it was 2pm and they didn't open till 4pm. Uggg. So we headed over to Fire Bowl, I had the Vermicelli Singapore, but prepared vegan style with fried tofu. It was good, not quite the same as it used normal, but it was good. Dinner: I think I am going to make some pancakes. Sunday, May 13. 2007Vegan For A Month: Day 5
Breakfast: Vegan Pancakes & Hashbrowns
Lunch: Chips & Salsa, Spinach Salad with a balsamic dressing @ the Alamo Drafthouse Dinner: Edamame, Hummus and some veggies that were in the fridge. Note: Jeremy has gone back to being an Ominvore. He and Gina had pizza from Papa Johns last night. Laterz Sunday, May 13. 2007Vegan For A Month: Day 4 Continued
Lunch: yeah Casa De Luz didn't happen. Not having ever been there, I wasn't feel adventurous enough to find the place on my own, especially after I looked it up on Google Maps and it was all the way downtown. So we are going to try to for next Friday to eat kale at Casa De Luz.
However, after looking around on the Internet for an alternative vegan lunch place. I found 'Dog Almighty', there were some reviews on the 'Net about their Vegetarian Chili. I have to say that I was intrigued. I knew were this place was, near a farmer's market, one my favorite BBQ joints in Austin used to be right in the same area, World BBQ Headquarters. They had some great brisket and their sides were fantastic. Anyway, I ordered a Veggie dog, some veggie chili and a side of fries. The dog wasn't bad, wasn't as good as the one that I had at 'Big Daddy's Hot Dogs', I think in part because the folks over at Big Daddy's butterfly the dog when they fry it on the cooker, so the texture is a bit better. The Veggie chili was fantastic. I had a hunch that they were using TVP, textured vegetable protein, in the chili. I had seen this stuff in Central Market's bulk section, it sort of reminds me of grape nuts when it is dry. However, in the chili it looks a lot like ground beef, it also has almost the same texture as ground beef. So much so, that I had to ask the lady behind the counter if it was TVP. I cooked up some portobello mushrooms for dinner. They were pretty tasty. We also had corn on the cob cooked on the grill, I grilled up some sliced sweet potatoes and also made some kabobs of cherry tomatoes, purple onions and red & green bell peppers. I was afraid of overcooking them and ultimately they could have been cooked a bit longer. I found it interesting that Jeremy never really eats mushrooms, I love mushrooms. Fresh, sauteed or grilled, I dig on fungi. As Jeremy's blog states, we went to some comic book shops after dinner. We were looking for a game that the two of us could play. I have some Magic card but I haven't played a real game in a while, just the PC version. Jeremy hasn't played anything but the PC version in years. Jeremy mentioned Settler's of Catan, I had heard of the game and seen it on the Xbox-Live marketplace recently, so I was interested. We went to my comic book haunt, Thor's Hammer. They were out of it. Unbelievable, Thor's Hammer specializes in games, but still has an ample comic book section. They had plenty of expansion packs for Catan, but not the main game. So we asked for direction to Dragon's Lair and headed out. Dragon's Lair had probably about the overall same selection as Thor's Hammer. However, Dragon's Lair doesn't have the space setup for role playing games that Thor's Hammer has. Dragon's Lair did have plenty of copies of Catan, including the $400 special wooden chest version. Laterz Friday, May 11. 2007Vegan For A Month: Day 4
Breakfast: Clif Builder Bar
Morning Snack: Organic Raisins (snack pack), Apple Lunch: Not sure, was supposed to go and eat at this place downtown, Casa De Luz, but probably go there next Friday. I didn't bring anything for lunch really, but I have salad stuff here. Tonight the plan is to get a refill of propane for the grill and grill some portobello mushrooms and veggies. Back to the Grind. Laterz Friday, May 11. 2007Vegan For A Month: Day 3 Continued
I had an afternoon snack of a Clif Z Bar.
For dinner I wanted to do something with the Tofu I bought. One important lesson that I have learned, that my wife and sister told me in passing is that you NEED to drain the tofu. I mean, let it sit out for like 20-30 minutes probably on some paper towel. I didn't do this, I let it sit on some paper towel for like 10 minutes. I bought this cast iron grill pan and had hopes of eating some tofu that was going to have some really nice grill lines on it. Nope! Now, I have not idea (yet) if some really drained tofu will stand up better to the grill pan than what I did with about half the tofu I made last night or not. But it was a mess, it just stuck to the pan (mind you I had put some olive oil on the pan, but the tofu slid into the grooves of the grill pan, forming a tight bond.) Anyway, I took the rest of the tofu and just pan fried it in some olive oil that had some left over garlic and onions in it, as I had just finished cooking some red peppers with onions and garlic. I made crustinis again, these turned out fantastic. Even Gina said they were great. The tofu that I pan fried ended up with a nice crunchy exterior and was quite tasty. I had also boiled up some whole wheat penne pasta, we put the red peppers and what not on top of the pasta. No desert really, was too stuffed. Thursday, May 10. 2007Vegan For A Month: Day 3
Breakfast: Clif Builder Bar
Pre-lunch snack: grapes Lunch: Iceberg salad, topped with red bell pepper, celery, avocado and oil vinaigrette. & a Clif ZBar. Given that I am used to eating vegetables fairly often I am not finding the diet too hard. However, Jeremy and I have been talking about how nice it would be to have some Arby's sandwiches. One of the things that I have definitely learned within the first 48 hours of being vegan, is that it is hard to find someplace to eat. I mean, I knew that as a fact, going into this. However, I didn't realize just how much of a pain it really can be. Reading the Vegan Freak book they talked about how you can tell who is usually vegan, because they are scouring the list of ingredients as if it contains the meaning of life, arguably it sort of does when your Vegan. Regardless, I think I will be able to make it to the end of the month, and in my current mindset I feel pretty good that I might keep up with it until July rolls around. Tonight I think we might try to grill some Portobello mushrooms tonight. Back to the grind. Laterz Thursday, May 10. 2007Vegan Update: Day 2 Continued
Had a good lunch of salad and vegetables last night.
Went to CostCo and bought a bunch of Clif bars, which appear to be vegan, per the ingredients listed. Had one of the Clif Builder bars for breakfast this morning. I bought some of the Clif ZBars, the ones for kids. I bought them because they were smaller than the regular ones. I don't need to eat a whole Clif bar for a snack. However, I did get scolded for buying the ZBars, because they are for kids. Oh well. Dinner consisted of Corn on the cob, Steamed Asparagus, French bread, and I made hummus. The Hummus I think turned out pretty well. We spread it on the bread. I also cut up some of the bread and poured olive oil on top and threw it in the oven, to make something like 'crustinis' (sp). Not sure what is on the menu for tonight, but I am thinking it will be something with tofu. Plenty of Hummus left over. Back to the grind. Laterz |
