You know what they say about the
best-laid plans of mice and men.
I didn't have a really well laid out plan for starting off the Vegan thing. I had assumed that after chowing down on some Rudy's BBQ we would hit the grocery store and stock up on Vegan stuff.
However, that didn't happen. We had discussed going to dinner then going home. However, I got confused about something and in the end we decided to head home first. Which, ultimately was the best thing we could have done.
Our little girl Emma had injured herself, quite severely. No blood or anything, that actually would probably be a welcome thing as opposed to the unknown scenario we are in right now.
Gina got home a little bit before us and when we walked in she was holding Emma and brought her up to me and asked me about Emma's leg. Her leg was all stretched out and tense.
Gina asked me if she should run her into the Emergency Vet, I definitely said that she should.
On the way, she had called a couple of friends who know things about animals and veterinary medicine. She called me and asked me to look around and see if Emma had eaten anything that she shouldn't have. Because she thought that Emma might be having an adverse neurological reaction.
I couldn't find anything in the kitchen or dining room. I expanded the search to the backyard, since that is where
Emma had dragged the lush bar to, when she ate that. Nothing in the backyard either.
I called Gina and let her know. By about that point, Gina had reached the Emergency Vet and they were going over Emma. Who mind you didn't appear to be in any pain when I was inspecting her leg that was all wonky. As Gina later told me, Emma was making that leg all stiff so that she could sort of prop herself up.
The Vet techs examined Emma and diagnosed that there was something wrong with her spine, something between the C1 & C4 vertebrates, as Emma didn't seem to feel or have general control over the left side of her body.
This means, that some how Emma got injured while in the kitchen, playing with the other dogs. Emma plays hard and what not, so it isn't a completely out of this world idea that she might have twisted something bad or hit or fell off something. No real evidence in the kitchen to suggest that anything fell on her.
All I know is that Gina and I are very worried. They are going to do a test where they inject some dye into her spine so that they can get a good look at the problem and diagnose the issue completely. I don't want to talk about the what if's, I know that she is going to be OK.
Gina went over there this morning to sign some papers and check on Emma. It is a good thing that the Emergency Vet that Gina took her to, turns into the same Vet's office that will do surgery (which we are pretty sure will need to be done), that way Emma doesn't have to be moved from one location to another.
Gina said that Emma looked good, they had her on IV fluids, and that she was still doing that thing with her leg to proper herself up.
I will keep you posted on what I hear. Gina expects to hear from Dr. Kaplan (sp, the day-time vet) around mid-day.
