More Power!!!
"But cap'n the engines canna take it!!!"
Or something like that, but seriously. Gina was on the hunt for a case for her new Treo 650 (think it is a 650, it is the crimson one) but that is a different topic for a different post. While we were at Fry's I saw that they sold batteries for my laptop. Now, normally I would order all of that kind of stuff online. But I was really tired of barely getting like 40 minutes on a charge of my existing battery. Now when I say they sold batteries, I don't mean replacement in terms of "Oh goody, a full hour of power". No, I mean a 12-cell battery, so like THREE HOURS of POWER!!! With that purchase, I figured I am banking on my laptop lasting at least another year or so. Which brought about another purchase. A docking station. For the past 2 years or so since I have had this laptop I have spent time plugging and unplugging power, Ethernet, video, and several USB cables (for mouse, keyboard, palm pilot). NO LONGER!!! The handy-dandy HP xb2000 Notebook Expansion Base now allows me to simply plug in just two cables, the Expansion Port 2 and the Video. It also has this nifty lifty thing it does. Where it raises up the monitor to a more appropriate ergonomic height. As you can see from the pictures below, the wide-screen monitor is still in use, but I had to find something to put it on. I have that monitor arm from home that I am not using (again, another story for a different time). I am thinking about bringing it in and seeing if it can handle this Acer AL2016W. I don't see why it can't, I mean yeah it is bigger than the 17-inch Samsung I had it attached to before, but this Acer really isn't too much heavier. So I will bring that in on Tuesday and see how it goes (and go into the details about why I am not using it at home anymore). Well I am all done here at the office, time to head home and enjoy the long weekend. oh yeah, I'm gonna make chili!!! Laterz Friday, August 31. 2007I can see!!!
The nice folks over at Austin Vision Associates put up with me calling them once (or several times) a day about where my glasses were the last couple of days.
In my defense the day that I called them three times was yesterday and that was because I was told the day before that they would be in on Thursday. So I called around like 10 I think and then again around 1pm. However, they accidentally hung-up on me, then my boss called so I called them back around 2pm. Anyway, I would have appreciated if they could have said "Your glasses will be ready on Friday." that way I would be have set my expectations. But on the same note, they told me they thought they would have been ready earlier as well. I am very glad to have my glasses back. When she called and told me that they were ready, she jokingly said "Now, please make sure to get a spare pair of glasses in the within the next three to six months." I said that I will and I am due for brand new glasses (frames and lenses) at the beginning of the year. So trust me I will be getting new glasses. In my defense, I have always kept my last pair of glasses around for as an emergency pair. Except, after getting this pair. I almost immediately proceeded to lose the pair from just before this pair. I mean, I dropped them off to have the anti-reflective coating redone (apparently there had actually been a recall, as it was scratching up real bad). I got them back and about a day or two later, gone. Who knows what happened to them. Sucks too, they were titanium frames, so the frame could bend quite a bit without having to worry about ruining them. Anyway, I can see again. Which is good, because last night at the office here, I couldn't bear wearing my old sunglasses anymore, so I pulled the monitor to within about 10 inches of my face so that I could read the screen without having to hunch over the desk. Well, it is officially Labor day weekend and I am still at the office. I need to pack it up and go. Laterz Wednesday, August 29. 2007A future so bright
I thought that was a better title than "I wussed out".
This mornings exercise of inserting my contacts didn't go quite as planned. I tried six times in the left eye before switching to see if I could get the right eye contact in. After about four attempts to put in the right eye contact, I gave up. Jeremy and I were already running late at that point and honestly I felt like my eyes were sending me signal. Luckily I had a pair of old glasses in the glove box that I had tinted to use as prescription sun glasses. So with the overhead lights on here in the office I can see pretty well, but if they were off the tinting on the glasses would make to too dark to really see. I am sure there will be many people asking themselves "Why is he wearing sunglasses inside?" It is because I couldn't get my contacts in this morning and they still haven't called me about picking up my glasses. I really, really hope they are ready this afternoon. I am going to call them at probably 1pm if I haven't heard from them by then. Back to the grind. Laterz Tuesday, August 28. 2007Operation: Contact
So I managed to get the right contact into my eye this morning on the second try, the first try it was really close to being in there, but nope.
The left eye on the other hand took four tries, the left eye seems very stubborn about stuff going into it. Gina made me get some "Rewetting Drops" from CVS this morning. She picked up some dry eye drops for herself. I will admit that when it is coming to my eyes that I am a big baby, I have never had to deal with willfully putting stuff into them, solid or liquid. So Gina just put some drops into my eyes. She had problems getting the left eye to open up enough to put drops into it. The right eye was not a problem at all. They both feel better, but still a little funky. I am hoping that my glasses are completed today, but I wouldn't bet on it. So likely I will need to go through the routine of removing them, putting them back in at least one more time. (and also removing them again so that I can put my glasses on) Back to the grind. Laterz Monday, August 27. 2007I'm blind, I'm blind
Up until about 10 minutes ago my eyes had itched unbelievably for the last few hours. I have taken the contact lenses out.
I did it all by myself, aren't you all just so proud!!! But seriously, Gina tried to help me get the left one out which seems to be the eye that is more troublesome when it comes to putting the lens in or out of my eye. However, the sight of her finger coming into my eye was too much for my blink reflex to handle. I just kept blinking, so I tried again and was able to successfully extract the left lens. Well, now I am blind. Luckily I can type well enough not to actually need to see the words on the screen. I can't say that I will be doing any real work on the computer without some form of corrective eye wear on, glasses or contacts. Bob Saget is on TV, his latest special is on HBO. I think he might be trying too hard to break his old squeaky clean image, his use of profanity at some points here seems basically like he is saying FSCK just to say it, with little or no relevance. A good chunk of his show is good. Well, I think I am going to read a book, which is an activity that I can do without needing my glasses. Oh yeah, almost forgot my home office is almost clean. It is probably like 89% clean, I have a bunch of stuff to clean off the desk itself but the floor is looking pretty good. Ok, bedtime. Laterz Monday, August 27. 2007"Everything old is new again"
That saying has been on my mind for a about the last 6 months. Normally it comes to mind when someone is pitching a new business or product or someone remakes a movie from the 70s or 80s, but doesn't call it a remake, instead they change up the plot line just enough to make it seem like a new idea, even though it is almost an exact copy of the original.
Regardless, today the thought came to mind for the title of this post, because I am using my old Nokia 3220 that I had been using on T-Mobile. When I switched over from T-Mobile to AT&T, I couldn't use my 3220, I have been using the Nokia 6030 I was given. The 6030 is an 'ok' Nokia 'brick' phone. However, it doesn't have a camera, it is a little thicker than the 3220 and it seems to like to lie to me about how much power it has left. So, I had been thinking about getting the 3220 'unlocked', the recent talk about folks unlocking the iPhone. I ran across a company called "Roam4Free" when we were at the ETel conference earlier this year. I have been following their blog lately and when I was looking across their site I noticed that I could unlock my phone for about $14 USD. This morning I paid my money, got my code and proceeded to unlock my 3220. It worked!!! I mean I wasn't expecting it to not work. But it gave me a great feeling of joy when it booted up and said AT&T on the phone. Well, I am gonna finish lunch. Laterz Monday, August 27. 2007i put my finger in my eye
There was a contact lens on the end of my finger though mind you.
So, I am getting new lenses in my glasses. However, I lost my spare pair of glasses a while back. So this means that I would be left without the ability to see anything. Obviously, not cool. The Dr. Donna Shepard over at Austin Vision Associates was kind enough to offer to put a pair of contact lenses into my eyes for me. Well, she was not the one who helped me out today, her husband was. (Pretty sure that he is her husband.) He made me put in the contacts myself. Putting them in was definitely a bit of a pain. I tried probably a total of about 10 times on the right eye and a good five or six on the left before getting the lenses in. Of course, then he wanted me to practice taking the lenses out. He made some comment about not wanting me to have to go to the emergency room at 10pm at night. I should have asked him why, I would have to go to the emergency room. I mean, I am pretty sure Gina could help me get the lenses out of my eyes. Anyway, after watching me struggle with putting them in, and the many (at least 4 or 5 per eye) attempts to remove them, he was kind enough to pop them into my eye. He made it seem, so so easy. I'm talking about like 15 seconds or less per eye. He had to do the left eye twice, but the right eye he nailed it the first time. I mean sure, he is a trained physician who knows the ways of the eye, but I would wager the external perspective helps too, when trying to land the lens on the tiny globe that is my eye. Regardless, they are in and I can see. Of course the funky bit is that the contact lenses are for my new prescription so not only can I see without having glasses sitting on my face. I can see better than I could with my old glasses. Mind you, I think he pulled a generic pair of lenses, because they are not 100% correct. There is a slight variance in the prescription between my left eye and my right. I am pretty sure it is my right eye that is stronger than my left. While I am seeing clearer than with my glasses, the far end range of my vision is still too blurry to properly read small print. The feeling of having something in your eye, is funky. I hope that my glasses are back tomorrow, but in all likelihood they won't be available until Wednesday. So that means that I will be stuck wearing these until then, meaning that I will be taking them out tonight and putting them back in the morning. Oh goody, that should be a fun 30 minutes in the morning (15 minutes an eye). I need to pickup a pair of cheap sunglasses, that way I won't be blind while I wear these contacts. The next few days will let me know whether I am destined to wear contacts on a regular basis or not. At this exact moment, it isn't looking too pretty. Time to wolf down my lunch and watch a little Daily Show. Laterz Wednesday, August 22. 2007Where does the time go?
Once again I am faced with the fact that I have neglected my blogging. Course, I am not the only one
Work has been busier and busier, so I haven't had the opportunities that I usually do to log during lunch. I mean, if I managed my lunch hour a little bit better I could watch clips of The Daily Show, eat my sandwich and blog. Maybe I will try that tomorrow, course I still haven't quite learned to chew bubblegum and walk at the same time. Jeremy is back in town. He picked up a copy of Halo2 the other day at Fry's. We saw some videos on YouTube on some pretty impressive Lego Mindstorms the other day, so yesterday we went to Toy's R Us to see if they had any kits. Well, as with most sought after items Toys R Us was found to be lacking what we wanted. Anyway, off and on over the last few days we have been playing Halo 2 after work, I have been lucky enough to beat him more often than not. However, he is getting better, while I am more or less just staying at the same skill level. However, neither of us are anywhere near being what one would probably call "Good". I bought Stratego a few weeks back. We played a couple of games of it last night, I won them both. I hadn't played that game in probably 15 years or so. We played a game of Scrabble after that, Jeremy beat me. I brought my laptop home tonight and decided that I would boot up and blog a little while I am on the couch. Unfortunately, I am fairly I cannot bring myself to work on the specs that I should work tonight. I have been writing up specs for the last two days. While not overly, overly detailed specs it has taken a toll on the old mind. Especially since I have been fielding other requests here and there, interruption while writing specs or documentation tends to be more of a drain than one would usually think. Anyway, I brought the laptop home thinking I would work a little bit, but that doesn't look like it is going to be the case. I bought "Babylon 5: The Lost Tales" the other day. I had seen that there was a new Bablyon 5 DVD a few weeks ago and had spent the last few trips to Target and Wal-Mart looking for it. I finally found it at Best Buy, otherwise I was going to have to buy it online. I have it on the TV right now. So far the storyline of the first lost tale is building, nothing critical has happened yet. I am not sure how the tale is going to play out just yet. Anyway. Let me tell y'all a little bit about what happeneed this past weekend. I dragged Gina out of the house on Saturday. (Pretty literally.) The original idea was to drag her out of the house grab breakfast and maybe see SuperBad. However, that isn't how it played out. We ended up going to The Salt Lick for lunch. Now, going to the Salt Lick from our place up here in Cedar Park is like an all day adventure, particularly since we didn't leave until about 10:30 almost 11:00. We had a good time at Salt Lick, we stopped on the way to pick up some Beer and Wine Coolers, since the Salt Lick is BYOB. On the way out of the Salt Lick I saw that they had a small easel setup with these little maps to some wineries around there. One of the little maps had something interesting on it "High Quality Olive Oil". Gina and I have had some great olive oil from this place up north, a Spanish olive oil. (I can't spell the name of the place, but it is like Fugarelli's.) So, we decided that we should follow the map and see where the adventure leads us. We ended up at this little ranch where they make their own olive oil, cold press, right there on the premises. They even grow most of their own olives. It is a working cattle ranch that also grows olives and grapes (for wine), they make their own wine on-site as well. The olive oil was fantastic. I mean it is hard to describe, but as cheap as I am let me tell you I had no problem paying $19.99 for a bottle of olive oil that is probably about 1/8 the amount of olive oil that I get from CostCo for $10 or $12. Anyway, they had some very interesting boutique type stuff too, mustards, jellies. However, the interesting thing was the balsamic vinegar, they infuse it with pears or lemons. We bought the one with pears. We also bought a couple of bottles of wine, a bottle of Sangria and a bottle of Tejanti. It was a fun time, we made it home at about 5:30. Well, I am getting sleepy, so best that I call it quits on the blogging for tonight. Till tomorrow, while I blog, eat and watch The Daily Show. Laterz Thursday, August 16. 2007Depression ...
The tropical kind, like the one that built up in the Gulf (of Mexico) and is hitting land near Corpus Christi (TX).
It has brought some needed rain here to central Texas. Don't get me wrong, we have had plenty of rain this summer. But the problem is that it has been coming all at once. Combining the heat and the soil composition of much of Texas all of that water just runs off. It can't sink deep into the ground as quickly as it has been arriving. So the occasional shower is what we need, probably at least once a week or maybe twice a week. The whole rest of the time it could be sunny and nice. Or if it just wanted to do that thing where it rains at night. All for that one. The wife loves its and well I am asleep so the gray skies don't bug me. Anyway, Jeremy is coming into town on Sunday. So it will be interesting if the weather sticks around for his arrival (and afterwards) like it has on previous visits. Not a lot has been going on, I was in Dallas the last couple of days. I have a conference call in a little bit, so I just wanted to get a post up since I haven't in a while. Back to the grind. Laterz Sunday, August 12. 2007Hot, Hot, Hot
My iGoogle homepage says that is 99 out. However, it has to be even hotter out than that.
It is 77 in the kitchen right now, but that is also because Gina was using the oven earlier. I had to run to the store to get some pasta shells so that Gina could finish making dinner. We also needed some Ice to I hit the 'Ice Shack', I don't know what else to call it. It is this little building, similar in size to those tiny espresso shacks, but without the clerk. You walk up, insert your $1.75 for a 16 lb bag of ice. You get 20 lbs of ice if you have your own container to put it all in. Anyway, I know this is Texas. SO not really whining, just reporting that Texas summer has come. I am pretty sure the last two days are the hottest we have had this summer. Maybe I bitched about the rain just a little too much. I would love if it just poured for an hour right about now. Laterz. |
