Thursday, May 31. 2007I hope I don't wash away!
It is raining here.
It was raining when we left to go to Dallas. It was raining harder in Dallas (last Friday). It was raining when we flew to Detroit. There was no rain in Lansing while we were there. (Which was excellent. Remember, I am solar powered.) The weather was OK in Detroit (on Tuesday). It had recently rained in Dallas when we landed (On Tuesday). It rained HARD during the day on Wednesday in Dallas. It was cloudy, but no rain on the way back to Austin. It started raining during the night. And the stream going down the street makes me think I will be washed away. (I will try to snag a photo) Laterz Monday, May 28. 2007Is that PPPoE on the floor?
Nope, never mind it is PPPoE in the router!
I talked to my Mother-In-Law and got some more information on what the issue was with the router. It appears that she would lose the Internet connection from time-to-time and had to unplug and plug in the router to get it back. This is basically the same thing that I had to do with my router. The solution I found for this was to enable PPPoE on the router vs in the DSL modem. Again, given that it is a D-Link router it took me a few extra minutes to figure it all out, but I got it all rigged up and working. I did find it interesting that I wasn't able to access the DSL modem via the router. I am able to do this on my home network as well as the network I setup at my Mom's place (which is basically a copy of my home network setup). I guess it must be a D-Link thing, possibly having to do with the Subnet configuration. Nope, doesn't appear to be the subnet. So that is pretty annoying, but oh well. I grilled steaks, asparagus, and vegetable shish-kabobs for dinner. My Mother-In-Law wanted her steak well-done. I haven't cooked a steak to well-done in quite a while, Gina and I eat ours these days close to medium. So unfortunately, all the steaks were closer to medium, luckily one of them was bigger and half of it was thinner, so it was pretty much well-done. Using my Father-In-Law's grill was a little bit of a challenge, at first I couldn't get it to light. Then there is the issue that it has a different set of hotspots than my grill back home. So the bamboo skewers that had the vegetable shishkabobs on them were burning on the ends but the vegetables were not cooking as quickly. Oh well, I need to get to bed. Laterz Monday, May 28. 2007Wifi Fixit Man
Is sort of what I feel like I guess.
As previously stated I setup a wireless router for my Mom. I just finished reconfiguring the router that @ my In-Laws' place. I need to ask them if they have been losing the Internet connection or just the wireless connection. I didn't get a chance to find that part out before I started working on it. However, I did notice that even though I was (and still am) sitting about a foot away from the router my laptop could not get onto the network. I had to download the DLink manual, as I am completely unfamiliar with their interface and what their default passwords for the routers are. It is possibly that I have mentioned in the past that I am a Linksys person. However, at the time that my Mother-In-Law was looking for routers I had just experienced a major problem with a Linksys router and the D-Link was on sale. So I told her that she might want to get it, the Dallas office has loved their's for years and I know a few others that sing D-Link's praises. After messing around in their interface and what not, I am still a Linksys fan. Sure the actions you can do within the interfaces are almost identical and I might be biased due to the fact that I have years of experience using Linksys' interface. But I don't care, I like Linksys. I will always try to buy Linksys, though occasionally I think they value their name a little too much. Well, I need to go and start up the grill and get dinner started. Laterz. Sunday, May 27. 2007

Today, I gave my mom and David the gift of wireless internet.
For X-mas I gave my mom and David the gift of high-speed internet, via Yahoo! DSL. Unfortunately, my mom's computer didn't have an Ethernet card. Notably, she never needed one before, the computer does have a shiny 56K modem. However, the computer that I gave David did have an Ethernet card, as it was my old Dell, that had been hooked up to my cable modem at one point. My mom's computer however, was an HP that came as a bundle. Moving on, on the way over to mom's we stopped at Best Buy and purchased a Linksys Wireless 54G router (with Speedbooster, LOL) and a Belking 54G usb stick wireless NIC. Now, normally I would never, ever buy any networking gear for a home office other than Linksys. However, I really just didn't want to pay $60 for a wifi usb stick, the Belkin was $29.99. And as I have said before 'It is all made in the same plan in China anyway.' I mean, honestly if you look at some of the high-tech gadgetry out there you will see that they have very similar form factors and that it is all just branding. Back to the wifi adventure. I got the wireless router online (not that it is any sort of technical achievement), I turned on the WEP security and I also rigged it so that the router does the PPPoE rather than the DSL modem. As this is the same setup that I have at the house. I didn't want my mom to have to deal the same fluke modem issues that I dealt with from time-to-time. I will admit, in my haste to plug everything in I didn't pay attention fully and had plugged David's Ethernet cord into the WAN port and the DSL line into a regular router port. Oops! I first got my laptop online as to make sure that everything was working as it should and to enable me to mess with the DSL modem and the router. I showed my mom how to enter in the WEP encryption key, should she need to show anybody how for next time. After finishing up that WEP training, I installed her Belkin NIC and let her establish the internet connection (ie put in the WEP key). She was online, high-speed style from her desktop. First time ever. She has been using David's computer for the last few months, which I am sure has been a pain. I had thought about drop shipping her a router and a wireless NIC. But I was pretty sure that the steps necessary to get all of this running completely smoothly might be a little overwhelming. This brings us to iGoogle, formerly known as 'Google Personalized Homepage'. I am not sure that I really like either name. I guess iGoogle is a little easier to say. I showed my mom how to setup 'Feeds' so that she can have an easier time telling if I have updated my Blog. Notably, she picked on me for not having updated since the 21st. After having showed her how to add a feed, she managed to show me something new (I had stepped away and wasn't watching her for a couple of minutes). She had found the 'Themes' for iGoogle. She had picked a theme that was fairly cute and also had an interesting aspect to it, because of the fact that the them has sort of a horizon look to it. They integrated the sun and moon part of the horizon to work off your local time zone, I am willing to bet that they have even worked it out so that the moon shows up according to the 'known' phases of the moon for your area. The idea is that the sun or moon will be shown in the approx location of where they should be on the horizon for your area, cute and neat. At this point I figured that I should see if mom wanted to blog. I know that she has enjoyed my Blog and as a whole I find Blogs to be a fairly good medium for sharing news and opinions about things. My mom tends to be a private person. So unfortunately for all you out there that might want to read it, she has used Blogger's security features to limit the reading of the blog to invitation only. This will likely mean only family and immediate friends. I am trying to convince her to run two blogs, one private and one public. This way she can post up her artwork and what not on the public side. I think My mom has a lot of good opinions, knowledge and art to share with the folks on the Internet. One step at a time though, one step at a time. She has wandered off to find some art work that she has been doing in class. So I better close out this post. Oh yeah, I did upgrade them to Firefox 2 while I was here. I have pushed Firefox on my all of my parents. So far everyone likes it. Mostly I did it because it is a bit more virus resistant (proof) than IE. Laterz (I have to write up a post about the adventures in Detroit that Gina and I had the last couple of days, that will have to wait until tomorrow). Tuesday, May 22. 2007Emma on YouTube
YouTube's bandwidth was working well today, so I was able to upload videos at lunch.

I got a notice that someone posted a comment on my YouTube video that I had uploaded of Emma.
It appears that SPRINGBOROMOM has a schnauzer that is named Emma. Here is one video from their collection. Which, reminds me I need to upload some of the videos I took of Emma in the backyard the other day. Oddly enough, SPRINGBOROMOM has some videos aptly named "Emma in backyard". Back to the grind. Laterz Tuesday, May 22. 2007Deja Vu ... Return of the King
I am pretty sure I fell asleep last night while we were watching 'Lord of the Rings III: Return of the King'.
I remember watching the rider guys (Rohan sp?) assemble, then I sort of remember crawling into bed. The reason this is Deja Vu, when Return of the King was first released we went to a midnight showing of it. The movie is like 3 hours long!! I distinctly remember nodding off several times during the last 45 minutes of the movie. Nod off, wake up, nod off, wake up. This is not a comment on the movie, merely a comment on the fact that I need to drink a Jolt or a ZipFizz before sitting down to watch this particular film. Back to the grind. Laterz Saturday, May 19. 2007I fell off the wagon after 11 days
I sit here conflicted and somewhat ashamed as I fell off the wagon last night.
I am writing this blog post today after having just consumed some tasty corn tortillas with melted cheese (quesadilla) and a Clif Builder Bar. Early yesterday morning, I made plans with some old friends that Jeremy hasn't seen in like 5 years, I had run into the Prellops a few weeks back, a completely chance meeting. I decided on Cracker Barrel, knowing that there probably wouldn't be anything on the menu for me. I figured this was going to be my defining moment during this Vegan adventure. I would either crack or I would endure. As the pressure to become an omnivore had been mounting this past week, I started too look at this experiment in dietary veganism as something more like a test of my personal discipline. I apparently lack consider personal discipline, that would be the conclusion of my vegan experiment. Given what I read in the book Vegan Freaks, I know that my vegan experiment was for all the wrong reasons, so I welcome any comments from the die-hard vegans out there. Within a few days of the start of all of this, I realized that being a Vegan was hard, very hard. I never thought it would be fall off a log easy, but I never thought it would be this hard. Of course this reminds me of an adage "If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.' Since this post is attempting to be about full disclosure of my experiment, I said a few days in 'Being a Vegan SUCKS!'. Mind you, I wasn't doing it for any of the right reasons. I am not morally opposed to meat. I was trying to find out what it was like to be my sister back in college. This week had it's fair share of stress at work, but I managed to be good about it all. I managed to go out to eat with coworkers and stick to a vegan lifestyle. There were some moments of poor planning that bugged me, I should have planned better, but I didn't. However, there was something that snapped, or maybe the term 'fractured' at lunch on Friday. We went to Sushi Sake, a decent sushi place near the office. I ordered Oshinko (various pickles), Miso, Edamame, cucumber rolls and avocado rolls. Maybe I should have ordered more food, but when Gina and Jeremy were eating their steak Bento boxes, I was overwhelmed with jealousy. I love the bento box, I love steak. I didn't want to continue with the experiment. Mind you, I had this feeling while folks were eating pizza in front of me. But this time it was a bit stronger. I ordered a bowl of fried rice at this point, figuring that the jealousy was mainly coming from my continued hunger. The fried rice had bits of pork in it. SUCK! I picked them out and ate the fried rice. While watching them eat the bento boxes, I thought about how I would probably eat eggs and bacon in the morning with the Prellops. I think I had resigned myself to falling off the wagon in the morning. However, then in the afternoon. I had a marathon conference call. This was the straw that turned the fracture into a full on break. I need a drink after work and more importantly I had an urge for comfort food. Unfortunately, comfort food typically isn't Vegan. I should probably restate that. Comfort food that can be bought at a restaurant is typically not Vegan. We ordered a variety of appetizers and I had a few drinks. The funny part about the drinks was that, I opened the menu and saw a good looking slush style drink that stated it was a red bull cherry slush. But it didn't come with any alcohol, I asked the waitress: Ben: Does this come with vodka? (pointing at picture of red bull cherry slush) Waitress: No. Ben: Can I get this with vodka? (still pointing) Waitress: Yeah, I think we can do that. They brought out the glass, and a full can of red bull. "Some assembly required", I thought to myself, I might have said this out loud as well. I had sort of wanted to order a steak. However, I was concerned that my body might reject a sudden infusion of red meat. There was a cobb salad on the menu. It was definitely not the best cobb salad I had ever had. But it was pretty good. That meal ended my 11 days as a Vegan. I won't go into the details about what I had for breakfast, but it was not Vegan, and I did find it tasty. I am not sure that I will ever try the Vegan thing again. I will continue to eat healthy, likely I will eat Vegan meals from time to time. I salute all of you Vegans out there. I salute your dedication and respect your moral convictions. Time to grab something to eat. Laterz Friday, May 18. 2007Emma Update: Had to put her on a leashThursday, May 17. 2007Funny, Funny vegan post
I found this post around 2-3 weeks before going vegan.
I can't remember if I posted a link to it up here on the blog. The writer had also decided to go Vegan For a Month, and in doing so opted to try a 'Cheese Alternative' and oh yeah, 'It Melts'. I on the other hand have avoided cheese alternatives, mostly because I love cheese. But I don't want to eat something that is like cheese. I mean I have had some soy dogs and soymilk. But that is a little different. I don't drink a glass of soymilk, i just pour it over cereal, to moisten it up and give it a better flavor than if I used water. The soy dogs, I mean come on a hotdog while technically a meat product is about as processed as meat gets, I mean the only stuff more processed that you could still call food would be something they feed the astronauts. They hated this cheese. I mean the description they give when eating the cheese is so great, I feel wrong pasting an excerpt from it here. But here is a sample: "... $4.59 is a lot of money to pay for bleached and compacted sewage... " Please go and read the whole post they wrote. Back to the grind. Laterz |
