Thursday, June 29. 2006Quick entry...
I just wanted to make a quick entry.
I recently wrapped up a project that has taken longer in the real-time world than I had wanted. The delay in completion came from interruptions and a couple of gotchas. It was one of those things where the primary task is simple and easy (it really was, done in like 45 minutes). However, to properly support that primary task you need other interfaces, more logic on managing it, etc. So it snowballed a little bit, but I tried to keep things within a small scope. I don't think I should talk too much about what the project was. But in short I put together a simplistic PHP middle-layer to accept HTTP_POST information from a client, so that they wouldn't have to send stuff directly to the SOAP based API. To anyone that isn't from work, or Jeremy that was probably pretty confusing. Let's just say I built something that "Made it easier to do business." I only play programmer when I have to for work, and typically for protoypes. Which is honestly fine with me. I like to dabble, my skillset however keeps me involved with multiple disciplines of business, programming is probably the smallest. My company has plenty of professional programmers, most of them good, some of them are new and still learning. However, there are time when you just need to get it done quickly, just to try something out, to "throw it against the wall and see if it sticks." That is when I usually find myself sitting in front of the monitor doing some "coding", instead of doing some "writing". Gina wrote a good entry last night. Well it is 9:00 am, time to start work. More at lunch. Wednesday, June 28. 2006

And then there were 4...
First there was Jeremy.
Then came Ben. Then Gina. And now, Amanda. Like I said blogging is spreading. (entry) Amanda is now telling me she has some more friends that want to have nice, simple blog sites. "Film at 11, we will keep informed as this story unfolds..." Tuesday, June 27. 2006so why not fly the friendly skies
That would be due to our four-legged friends, the wife calls them our children. I guess I can agree with that. They meet me at the door when I come home, happy to see me. I miss them when I am away on travel. I sit with them on the couch on the weekends. I guess they are like children.
My little Emma Lou, she sits like people on the couch sometimes. If not for her lack of thumbs I would think she is a toddler. Well they are the reason we don't fly. 1. They would only let us have them down in the hold, which is not properly heated or cooled for any living thigns comfort. 2. They charge like $150 per dog. So we drive. We drive through Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and finally Michigan. All the way saying "Get in the back." Pushing a tiny terror back into the backseat from whence they came. All the while they are trying their hardest to get up into the front. Why you might ask? I would like to think it is because they love us. But I think more so it is because when I am not in the car with Gina and the dogs are, they sit in the passenger seat. Which means, I am in their spot. Luckily there are hotel chains out there like La Quinta that are extremely dog friendly. These hotels allow us to keep our tiny terrors with us while we travel. Well the wife just shot me the look. I did say that I was coming to bed about 15 minutes ago. Time to get cracka-lackin. More about the trip later. Monday, June 26. 2006T-107 hours and counting
The following may not be our exact route, but this likely to be pretty darn close. (Map Details)
![]() 1,473 miles the distance they say it will take. 26 hours is how long they say we will be on the road. I believe we have driven this about 7 times. I will have to confirm that with the wife. But I think it is 7 times. When we finally get back to Austin, that will bring the total to 9. Historically we have been able to make the trip in approx 24 hours. Avg speed of: 70 mph = 21.00 hours 65 mph = 22.66 hours 60 mph = 24.55 hours Due to the fact that I can't sleep while Gina is driving, I force her to stop for the night along the way. Not to mention the fact that spending 24 hours in a car (with 4 dogs) is not at all my idea of fun. This time around I hope to get her to let me stop and take photos at scenic points along the way. You know to say that we at least stopped for 5 minutes here and there along the way to take into perspective the cities and states that we go through. From my point of view stopping once in a while (for more than gas) on a trip that takes 24 hours of straight driving, doesn't hurt. Now if the trip was like 3-6 hours. Sure, stop for gas and that is it. But more than that and you need to try to enjoy the trip itself, cuz it isn't going to be over anytime soon. Now who wants to take bets on how often we will have to stop. Oldsmobile Achieva (specs) 15.2 Gallon fuel capacity 28 MPG (spec) 1,473 miles @ 28mpg = 52.6 gallons 52.6 gallons @ 15.2 = 3.46 times. It has been too long for me to remember what the Achieva's LONG distance mpg is. But recent trips to Dallas definitely have it between 26 and 28. The avg gas price right now is between $2.75 & $2.85. However, I fully expect that the avg price is to be about $2.99. This means that it is going to cost between $144.65 to 157.27. (approx $300 round-trip). If we had been able to take the Corolla (spec) we would get about 32 mpg. Meaning: 1,473 @ 32 = 46.03 gallons 46.03 @ 10 = 4.63 stops $126 to $137, approx $263. So only about $40 in savings. But in the summer that is some decent beer money. Time to hit the sack. Got a long day tomorrow too. Monday, June 26. 2006AJAX, not just for cleaning sinks anymore
(Warning overly broad generalization follows)
Web 2.0 = AJAX I still need to locate the first article that I read that spoke about Web 2.0 and AJAX. At the end of the article I had come to the conclusion that Web 2.0 meant websites that used AJAX. While I am sure that the Wikipedia entry is most informative and can explain AJAX to anyone reading this post. But let me make it real short and sweet. Google Maps uses AJAX, Gmail uses AJAX, Google Talk inside of Gmail uses AJAX. (also the google spreadsheets) AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript And XML). AJAX allows web developers to break out of the layout restrictions of standard HTML. There are some other nice technical nuances that it eliminates. Pros: 1. You can build applications that look and feel like desktop apps. You can have drag and drop elements. 2. You can update information on the screen without having to do a whole screen refresh. Cons: 1. You have to know a lot about Javascript and probably how to build a webservice. Now, I have played around briefly with Google's AJAX web toolkit. It was very cool. However, it was designed to allow you to write JAVA code and have it converted to AJAX. Yippeee, I don't know JAVA, and don't really have a desire to learn it. Note: Google will soon finish their secret SkyNet project and take over the world, but until then there are plenty of other AJAX kit developers out there. The one that I found out about today through my new best friend Digg , is MuseStorm. They offer a good looking tutorial on how to build an AJAX desktop. The thing I liked about it most is that it will let me create a desktop look and feel page that manages my RSS feeds. (Think of RSS feeds as a magazine subscription, but you get to pick the types of articles you want.) There are services out there that will aggreggate your RSS feeds for you, even firefox will do that for you, to a degree. But this seems like the perfect project to cut my teeth on about AJAX and get some benefit, my own RSS feed manager. They have a nifty little demo. Well back to the grind. Monday, June 26. 2006

T-5 Days and counting
So much to do before we take off. Have to get it ready for the pet sitter.
Not to mention that this week will be one of the busy weeks at work for me ever. Well back to the grind. When I get a chance I am going to post up our planned route to MI. Sunday, June 25. 2006long day
It has been a long day. To some degree a long weekend.
I would like to say that I am used to travel. But the last few weeks seem to have been very tiring. I think the eBay developer conference took a lot out of me. I was already on the road, in Dallas, then last minute trip to Vegas. So lost gained two hours there, only to lose them when it was time to come back. Then I have been spending a couple of days in Dallas each week. Sometimes two, sometimes three. Last week I spent Weds & Thursday. The week before I went to Longview, for a day trip (entry) . Gina had an interview and I had not met with Angie in a while. Yesterday, I slept the day away. I mean don't get me wrong I normally sleep a big part of Saturday away. It gives me a chance to recharge. I mean it didn't hurt that I was up till 3am on Friday night, so sleeping in on Saturday wasn't anything big. What sucked was getting up early to take Gina's car into the shop, so 3am - 7am. Anyway. Today we took a midday nap, it felt great. Slept from 11 - 3:30. Course midday naps always make the day seem longer than a normal day. We went and saw 'The Lake House' ... ![]() I have to say that I really liked it. I am sure that I would have enjoyed Nacho Libre too. Well, it is getting late I have some laundry in the washer. And I am about to pass out. I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow and I best get my beauty sleep. I guess it is T-5 days before the journey north. Saturday, June 24. 2006Finally over 1000 xp, I get to be level 2 now
So the wife was pushing me to get out of the house and awa from my computer.
So I decided to embrace my inner geek. I had been trying out the Magic scene. However, the monetary investment in that game as a whole is a huge turn off. And unfortunately my trips to Dallas have frequently been falling on the days that would allow me to play a 'draft' game of Magic that is more about skill (and luck) vs how much $$$ you spend on your deck. I haven't given up on the whole Magic scene, but definitel have not had the opportunity to pursue it as much as I would like to have. So about the same time I also started looking for a group to join and play some D&D. Since Gina's days off alternate every other weekend, I figured a Saturday or Sunday game would be good. However, our games have usually been Friday nights. Which are not quite a convenient as a saturday afternoon. We start at 7pm and end around 10 or 11pm. We have lost 2 members of 7, but gained 3 more this past sessions, so we are actually +1 total. But tonight we were missing two folks. I am a half-orc druid. To be quite honest my character sucks balls. I don't have any extremely excellent stats, and to some degree I have a few that are down right awful. At the start of the party we had no healers. So I opted to play druid. Be a bit of a healer and eventually a powerful caster/fighter. However, in the meantime I suck. I can't fight really, and I don't have enough healing spells to really keep the party going past one or two combat encounters. Mind you, our DM is a little twisted. He keeps throwing some tough stuff at us. So after combat we usually have to rest, heal and regain spells. Anyway, I am now level 2. This will make things a little better, another couple of spells. And I think I get a new ability. At level 3 I get a new feat, that I am looking forward to. So I have embraced my inner geek. I need to buy some newer D&D books though, im using version like 2.x. Friday, June 23. 2006No time for love Dr. Jones
I am under deadline and don't have time to post a real entry. I will do that later on tonight.
However, my wife finally did her own entry on her blog. (Five Dog Quartet) I made a comment on there, hopefully this trackback thing works. Thursday, June 22. 2006Guiness Extra Stout.... Too Stout
So the Dallas office at the Infomart was dismantled today. Everything taken down and put into boxes and hauled off by the movers.
The new Dallas office is much better. Has room to expand and a lot of cool amenities. But this meant that they also took the internet away. So that meant I had to hang out down @ the Hi-tech lounge. I felt sort of bad about the idea of me sitting there for several hours and leeching their free wifi. Which apparently you can get arrested for... (Article). So I ordered my favorite beer, Guiness, they didn't have it on tap, or in a can, only in the bottle. I am not sure what the difference was, maybe I should have asked for a glass to pour it into. I like a bitter bear, but this was just too bitter. Anyway, I nursed it for about 3.5 hours before I left for Austin, having only finished about 1/4 of it. Oddly enough, the CEO of my company was in Dallas and was heading out to Austin too. So we raced to Austin (I lost). He has a nice Audi, with cruise control. And well I have my trusty Corolla. I had a nice 3 mile head start, thanks to my short cut of taking the access roads as far south as you can, rather than fight through what they call the "Mix Master" on I35 south in Dallas. He passed me about 2 miles outside of Hillsboro. I probably could have kept my lead, but I was running low on gas (damn low fuel light wouldn't go off) and I didn't want to run out of gas, so I had started to go about 60-67 vs 75. Anyway, as it turns out he had to stop in Hillsboro for gas as well. Seeing as he was apparently running on fumes as well. so 10.41 gallons later (interestingly, the Corolla only has a 10 gallon tank), which came to around $28.75, I was back on the road. He passed me again shortly beyond Hillsboro, I kept pace for a bit, but eventually lost sight of him as I got stuck behind some truckers. It was a long day. I will try to post during lunch. |
